Roll-on deodorant, descendant of ballpoint pen

Roll-on deodorant was invented at the end of years 1940 in the United States.

The intuition came to Helen Barnett Diserens while observing an invention that at those times was revolutionizing the handwriting: the ballpoint pen

Ink flew perfectly dosed while rolling on a ball. So she thought: why not using the same mechanisms in the cosmetics?

And it is how the roll-on came to light, a system that, from that moment on, has become one of the most utilized applicators worldwide.

In pocket version, ergonomic shapes, dosing practicality, the roll-on is a quite committing challenge for the packaging conditioning companies, as it requires more and more sophisticated filling and capping solutions.

Aerosol Can capping

The offer of the Ronchi Mario spa does not cover machinery only, but ideas and solutions first. The Research & Development team at Ronchi’s has studied a revolutionary capping system specially devoted to the Aerosol Can capping.
Container and cap are both cylindrically shaped.
The demand is to ensure the perfect cap orientation following the main silk-screen printing on the container, at a speed of 400 b.p.m.
A challenge, for the achievement of which it is necessary to read both bottle and cap and to align them accurately according to the specific requests of the Customer.

A capping system of the SIRIO/S line has so been realized that, through the application of brushless motors and a sophisticated reading equipment, ensures the most accurate orientation between cap and bottle, with just 1,5 tolerance degree. The system has been studied and guaranteed in full compliance with the ATEX standards.

Back from Pack Expo 2008

Interview with Michele Falsini, Area Manager Ronchi Mario Spa for the U.S. market.

First of all, how did it go?
Although we have noticed a lesser amount of attendees to the show, we had good quality of contacts.

What strategic role plays for the Ronchi Group attending to the Chicago PMMI Show?
Ronchi has been attending the Chicago PMMI show for several years with improved success each time.

Our attendance to this show plays a dual role: expanding our exposure to the North American market and consolidate our presence especially in the US.

What new tendencies have emerged for the packaging industry?
Package variation and diversification, up to some extent, is becoming a must across all industries, which translate from an operation stand point in an incremental requirement for flexibility without compromising on productivity. Machine manufactures are asked to put extra efforts in producing equipment that are capable to change over faster implementing easy to use solutions.

What role Trade Shows play for the packaging machinery industry?
Show attendance for packaging machinery manufactures is an opportunity for meeting with the consolidated customer base and eventually making new contacts.

Does you packaging work?

If you want to have an answer to this question, you must not anxiously wait for sales charts any longer: now you can test it before launching it on the market.

A laboratory, named “Emotional Packaging”, has been created in Milan, Italy, reproducing,  in accurately studied spaces,  the experiencing processes the shopper goes through in its interaction with the products and their packaging.

This is a site where the producers can check the efficacy of their products and find solution to preserve the trust of their customers.

The idea has come from a company specialized in the study and realization of shops and supermarkets, in partnership with a company which studies and analyzes the impact of emotions on consumers’ shopping behaviours.

How much ketchup do we consume?

35,8 millions of tons. According the data emerged during the 8th World Tomato Congress held in Toronto, Canada, this is the annual forecast about the worldwide consumption of tomato derivates for 2008.

The consumption, by now extended to the planet, has outlined in the last 10 years a yearly increase of 2,9%. North America and UE countries doubtless represent the peak of the consumption the world over;  main consumer is North America, with 30 Kg. per capita per year. As to ketchup production, California is at the top of the list of the tomato converters

An interesting remark comes from Africa, which results to be the third world region as far as consumption is concerned. In the specific, sausages and ketchup have undergone a rapid growth (from 420.000 to 900.000 tons). In terms of market shares, the sector represents the 12% approx. of the global movements.

‘Top-down’ Filling

Many tons of ketchup and sausages reach our tables into containers featuring more and more sophisticated shape, fruit of the new frontiers dictated by reasons of marketing to capture the attention of the consumer and to the benefit of a better practicality of use.

Packaging manufacturers, indeed for answering the smartest market requirements, have studied and realized bottle unscramblers and orienter standing out for their extreme versatility.

For bottles designed to stand on its cap (top-down) Ronchi has realized a machine allowing the 180° rotation of the capped bottle before being conveyed again to the packaging line.

For unstable bottle, Ronchi has realized a special unscrambler version, whereas the bottle falls into a transport puck, thus rendering quite easy the bottle conveyance through the line.

Thanks to a quick and simple “no tool” format change-over device, it is possible to handle every format.

Also, these machines are equipped with a puck feeding device releasing them just in presence of the bottle coming out the unscrambling hopper  (“no bottle-no puck” system).

The adoption of brushless motors allows the elimination of eventual conveyors for the recirculation of the empty pucks.

It is also possible to orient the bottle before being inserted into the puck tank to vision system through video-camera, bar code or photo-eyes. Leer ms »
